The first mosaic I ever attempted was in 1983 using commercial tiles which I broke by throwing on the basement floor. Crude but effective! I nevertheless began to search for more efficient methods and in these past seventeen years (and hundreds of mosaics later) have refined my techniques to include better tools, a kiln and pottery studio. My tiles are hand-produced or altered, which allows me to work in more detail, with an infinite palette of colors and textures.
I begin each project with an idea, an appropriate surface (either 2 or 3 dimensional), a studio full of tiles and some odorless adhesive! After I have finished gluing the tiles in place, the design is then grouted and cleaned. Although the majority of the mosaics start from a bag of earthenware clay, I occasionally use other materials including stained glass and found objects.
