All my life I’ve
been enamored of
artists.
After getting a
BA in chemistry
at St. Olaf
College and a
PhD in Economics
and teaching at
several
universities, I
became a
television
reporter-photographer
(a one-man
band).
It was a
glorious time
and, because of
the photography
involved, I once
remarked, “This
is the closest
I’ve ever come
to being an
artist.”
My goal was to
become a
national
economics
correspondent.
Fortunately,
that did not
happen—I say
fortunately,
because being a
one-man band
became a true
love and
nurtured my
photographic
skills.
I’ve done TV
stories for KVLY-TV
in Fargo, ND,
for more than 20
years.
In late 2005 I
bought my first
digital still
camera; shortly
after that I
bought a
high-end inkjet
printer.
Both were
liberating
tools—no film
wasted and no
photo labs to
contend with.
I don’t
necessarily want
to document the
world the way we
all see it. I
love to see the
world in an
unusual and, I
hope,
interesting and
creative way.
